The solar panel that turns plastic rubbish into clean fuel

Sunlight goes in, old plastic and water go in, and clean fuel comes out.

Most solar panels turn sunlight into electricity. A team of chemists at the University of Cambridge has built one that makes fuel instead. Sunlight lands on the panel and powers a chemical reaction that turns plastic waste and water into clean hydrogen fuel, along with useful chemicals that industry already buys every day. Nothing is burned and no harsh chemicals are needed. The sun does the work, and an old drink bottle gets a genuinely useful second life.

For years this trick only worked on a lab bench, on a piece about the size of a dinner plate. Now the team, led by Professor Erwin Reisner, has scaled it up to a panel a full square metre in size and run it outdoors in natural sunlight for the first time, with results published this June in the journal Nature Chemical Engineering. Better still, the light catching layers are simply sprayed on at room temperature, a technique factories already understand. The researchers are upfront that the panels need to last longer and work harder before they reach recycling depots and rooftops. But a device that takes two problems, waste plastic and dirty fuels, and quietly turns one into the answer for the other is the kind of idea worth cheering all the way to market.
